The 2015 Tesla Model S 70D was a sedan produced from 2015 to 2016. It features a dual motor (ac induction) AWD powertrain. EPA-rated range is 240 miles with 101 MPGe. It accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 5.2 seconds. Top speed is 140 mph. Manufactured at Fremont, CA.
The 70D marked a turning point for the Model S lineup. Introduced in April 2015, it was the first dual-motor, all-wheel-drive Model S, and Tesla made AWD the default going forward. The "D" stood for dual motor, with a smaller unit on the front axle working alongside the rear. It replaced the old 60 as the entry-level Model S.
It was also the first Model S available with Autopilot hardware (Mobileye's EyeQ3 chip), though it was an optional add-on. The 70D proved that AWD didn't have to kill efficiency; it actually improved it slightly over the old single-motor 85 in some conditions.
