The cheapest Model S ever offered, and one of the rarest. The 40 was announced as the $59,900 entry point, but so few buyers ordered it (about 4% of reservations) that Tesla cancelled the trim in April 2013 before building a dedicated 40 kWh pack. Customers who had ordered one received a 60 kWh car software-limited to 40 kWh capacity.

That quirk made the 40 a collector's oddity: owners could later pay to unlock the full 60 kWh pack. EPA range was 139 miles, modest even by 2013 standards, which is exactly why almost everyone stepped up to the 60 or 85.
