The 2022 Tesla Model X Plaid was an SUV produced from 2022 to 2024. It features a tri motor (permanent magnet, carbon-sleeved rotors) AWD powertrain. EPA-rated range is 333 miles with 98 MPGe. It accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 2.5 seconds. Top speed is 163 mph. Manufactured at Fremont, CA.
The Plaid Model X took Tesla's tri-motor powertrain from the Model S Plaid and stuffed it into a three-row SUV with falcon wing doors. The result was the fastest-accelerating SUV ever produced, capable of sub-2.5-second 0-60 times. It hit quarter-mile numbers that would've won street races a decade earlier.
Unlike previous performance Model X trims that used two motors, the Plaid added a carbon-sleeved rear motor spinning at higher RPMs for more top-end power. It shared the refreshed Palladium interior with its Long Range sibling, including the yoke and the rear entertainment screen. The Plaid X occupied a strange and wonderful niche: a family hauler with hypercar acceleration.
