The 2020 Tesla Model Y Long Range AWD was an SUV produced from 2020 to 2024. It features a dual motor (permanent magnet + ac induction) AWD powertrain. EPA-rated range is 316 miles with 121 MPGe. It accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 4.8 seconds. Top speed is 135 mph. Manufactured at Fremont, CA / Austin, TX / Shanghai / Berlin.
The Model Y started deliveries in March 2020, right as the world was shutting down. Built on the Model 3 platform with about 75% shared parts, it added a liftback hatch, more cargo space, and available third-row seating. The Long Range AWD was the launch trim, and Tesla priced it to compete directly with compact luxury SUVs like the BMW X3 and Audi Q5.
It became the best-selling vehicle on Earth by 2023, not just among EVs, but all cars globally. The crossover form factor was exactly what the mass market wanted. Tesla had figured out that most people don't want a sedan; they want a slightly taller sedan with a bigger trunk.
