In April 2019, Tesla quietly rolled out the "Raven" update, the most significant mechanical change to the Model S since launch. A new permanent magnet switched reluctance motor replaced the old induction unit on the front axle, the same motor type used in the Model 3. The rear kept its AC induction motor. This boosted efficiency dramatically, pushing EPA range to 370 miles from the same 100 kWh pack.

The Raven also brought adaptive air suspension as standard and a redesigned front drive unit. Tesla dropped the old alphanumeric naming (85D, P100D) in favor of simpler "Long Range" and "Performance" labels. The exterior looked the same, but the drivetrain was fundamentally different.
